Music Video Release: 30 Degrees (On the Rocks) by Loudhaler
Fortune 500 Music is celebrating the completion of the music video for '30 Degrees (On the Rocks)' by Loudhaler (featuring Hinemoana Baker). This is the first music video to be made from his music. It's directed by Stephen Bain and features Wellington dancer and yoga instructor Kristian Larsen as 'Man on the Street'.
Loudhaler is Wellington-based musician/producer/engineer Jason McClelland and '30 Degrees' comes off his second album 'Noodlehouse'. Released independently in 2004 on F500music, the album was warmly received and playlisted on bnet stations, with Rip It Up describing it as 'SJD on caffeine without the ballads'.
The unique sound of '30 Degrees' is attributed to the conditions it was produced under - an intense couple of summer days in mid 30-degree studio heat where technology glitches and heat exhaustion threatened a successful outcome. But the track survived and emerged with a nice sunstroked, eclectic, dub/reggae feel.
Singer-songwriter and poet Hinemoana Baker was called in between sessions recording her own album, 'Puawai'. She kindly applied the vocal aloe vera with her own take on summer, a beautiful te reo siren call to Kapiti Island inspired by the view from her home on the Kapiti Coast.
Video Director Stephen Bain is a Toi Whakaari graduate who has been working as a theatre maker for the past 15 years. As well as acting extensively for theatre and television, he has directed many shows for the Wellington stage. He is co-founder of Under Lili's Balcony Theatre Company who created choreographic theatre pieces from 1996 to 2002.
Stephen has more recently been working in video, creating performance pieces under the guise of Digital Cabaret. He has also produced a music video for Leila Adu (2002) and a 30-minute dance film (2005), and a multimedia piece, 'Turbulent Flux', for the City Gallery Wellington Cinema as part of the Fringe Festival 2004.
Actor Kristian Larsen is a graduate of both Unitec-Performing Arts School & The New Zealand School of Dance. He has worked extensively as a performer with many New Zealand choreographers and has been a tutor of contemporary dance and composition at Wellington Performing Arts Centre, & Whitirea Polytechnic's dance course. This year he has been asked to teach improvisation at The New Zealand School of Dance. He is a sought after yoga teacher in the Wellington region, and is a practitioner of the Afro-Brazilian martial art, Capoeira.
The video was shot by Stephen Bain on digicam in Wellington and some scenes feature that famous Wellington fog that's been closing the airport.
The production was funded independently by fortune500music. 'Noodlehouse' is distributed through Global Routes.
